Somehow a tadpole got in—
Iridescent as oil, it swirls dizzy whirlpools,
bumps the painted wall, and flickers
beneath feathered shadows.
My head bobs blue ripples in the tepid water.
From the cabaña, a blurry voice drifts
through chlorinated air:
One kiss and you get a prince.
A lizard perches at the edge of the pool
and swells its rosy throat.
The tadpole paddles toward me
and I’m like, Ugh, here we go,
and he’s like, Have you seen
my new magazine? so I offer my lips—
Reader, I swallow him.
